Saturday's Workout is Brought to You By...

... broom, machete, and my hands!

GardenGarden Garden

Yeah, it is just time to clean up in the garden, which is becoming a forest now. Last Friday, when I got home from my morning walk + a trip to the nearby market, our neighbor Charmy asked if she could borrow our ladder so she could harvest the ripe papaya in their garden. After, we had some chit-chats and she asked if I wanted to trim down the hibiscus plant. Seeing how horrendous our garden turned out, I figured it was time for a little de-cluttering.

These pictures were the "after" pictures... I wasn't able to take "before" pictures because I knew my hands would get dirty (I don't wear gloves, I want to feel the earth in my hands), I decided to keep my phone and camera inside the house.

Hanging Plants
Anyway, I did tell mom that I'd take down unnecessary plants, especially those which aren't really flowering. My mom planted this certain plant which "runs," it has a snake-like vine and the plants look like water lilies and has taken over the entire garden. I didn't take it all out, I left some... I didn't really feel guilty about it because I consider it as like trimming the hair or the nails. Like I said, I didn't take it all out, and for sure in time they will all grow back.

The de-cluttering allowed me to have some spaces, which I can use to grow tomatoes. I was pretty devastated when my tomatoes didn't grow the last time I attempted to plant them... I was told I should plant them during summer, so since it is officially summer here, time for me to try growing tomatoes again... as well as some bell peppers!

My hands and back were aching after this (and my shirt was soaking wet) as I filled 2 sacks of dried twigs, leaves, as well as the trimmed plants, but it felt good. Although my arms have lots of spots and rashes from the insects and dirt, I still loved that I was able to do it.

  1. Good job! I remember helping to clear out the coconut trees and dead parts of the "front yard" of my boyfriend's house in Puerto Rico. It was a lot of work but also very rewarding and fun!

  3. Hello, Jenn

Welcome to Sunlit Sunday! It's always nice to see a new participant and, in your case, to have someone bring a bit of summertime to my Canadian winter.

I'm trying to imagine what it would be like to grow papayas; at least we have tomatoes in common, but it will be a couple of months before they can be planted here. It looks like you have plenty of lush greenery in your garden.

Thanks again for participating. I hope you enjoy the other posts that have linked as well.

  7. Wishing you the best with tomatoes this year. There is nothing like a homegrown tomato, they taste so good.
