Rags2Riches Newel Collection Launch

Last year, I was able to attend the Rags2Riches by Aranaz - Nudos Holiday Collection, and was in awe at how knots would create such fabulous pieces. This year, I took part of yet another Rags2Riches launch, this time featuring the rich art of T'boli and T'nalak called Newel, held at the Gallery of Greenbelt in Makati, and was co-presented by MetrobankCard Femme Visa, in cooperation with Businessworld, herword.com, and Greenbelt.

Newel, or "weave" in T'boli, is about fusing modern urban artisanal weaving with the indigenous Filipino heritage textile called T'nalak. The new collection aims to show three distinct elements - style, substance, and sustainability.

The T'nalak is an intricately woven and hand-dyed abaca fabric that originates from the indegenous T'boli tribe from the mountain ranges of Southern Mindanao. It is said that weaving the T'nalak is a sacred ritual and the patterns that appear on the finished pieces are products of dreams, beliefs, myths, and religions.

Rags2Riches' new style advocate is non other than Ms. Bianca Gonzales, one of the sought-after TV personality. Aside from being a TV host, she is also a writer, editor, model, and blogger. She is known for her humanitarian advocacies and has founded "Help Kids Learn Project," and is also a UNICEF Champion for Children. These (and more of her achievements) make her the perfect ambassador for the Rags2Riches brand.

The Newel Collection features six creations:

These bags are available for purchase both locally and internationally. For more details, you may check the Rags2Riches website for the complete list of stores.

All of the pieces look great, but my favorite would have to be the Hedem Hobo Bag, because it looks elegant, yet something I can use everyday.

At the event, I wore the blue dress, which I bought at Divisoria last year. You might have seen me wearing this during my cousin's wedding, but I did use a different pair of shoes - which I bought recently at the Payless Shoe Source.

ps - I wasn't able to photograph each of the bags as is, so the stylized images of the bags were taken from the catalog of R2R Newel Collection. Credit goes to its photographer. The rest were my images.

  1. Hi Jessie! I'm visiting from thepleatedpoppy & transatlanticblonde. I really love all their pieces...as a filipina, I'm always proud of our own products. I love how they incorporate native materials to a modern design. :)
